A Wedding In December By Anita Shreve,  Abacus, £6.99

I'VE lost count of the number of women I've seen reading this book recently. On buses, in cafes, it seems it's the big read of this summer for lots of folk.

And it's not hard to see why.

It's got all the ingredients which make this type of novel such a success.

Seven former schoolmates reunite for a wedding.

They bring with them all their emotional baggage that they were so free of when they first became friends.

The revelations and recriminations come thick and fast.

But the real enchantment is in Shreve's writing style. There's an easy flow to it. Now I know why all those readers can't seem to put this book down.
